General information to discuss with your vet, not a diagnosis. If your pet is unwell, contact a vet.
Vaccines protect dogs from diseases that are common in Pakistan and often fatal, such as parvovirus, distemper and rabies. A puppy needs a short series of shots to build protection, and adult dogs need boosters for life. This guide shows a typical schedule based on widely used international guidance. Your vet will adjust it for your dog's age, health and history, and the brands available in Pakistan combine vaccines in different ways.
Why puppies need a series of shots
Puppies get some protection from their mother's milk, but it fades between about 6 and 16 weeks and, while it lasts, it can block a vaccine from working. Nobody can tell exactly when it fades for a given puppy, so vets give a shot every 3 to 4 weeks until about 16 weeks old. That way one of them is sure to "take".
Vaccines every dog needs
- Distemper: affects the lungs, gut and brain. Often fatal, and survivors can be left with fits.
- Parvovirus: severe bloody diarrhoea and vomiting. Very common in unvaccinated puppies in Pakistan and survives for months in soil.
- Hepatitis (adenovirus): damages the liver.
- Rabies: always fatal once signs appear, and it can pass to people. Essential in Pakistan.
In Pakistan these are usually given as a combined shot, often written as DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) or DHPPi + L when leptospirosis is included, plus a separate rabies vaccine.
A typical puppy schedule
| Age | Vaccine | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 weeks | 1st DHPPi (+ L where your vet uses it) | First vet check, weight and deworming too |
| 10 to 12 weeks | 2nd DHPPi + L | Leptospirosis needs 2 doses, 2 to 4 weeks apart |
| 12 to 16 weeks | Rabies | Many vets give it at 12 weeks; follow your vet |
| 14 to 16 weeks | 3rd DHPPi + L | The last puppy dose should be at 16 weeks or older |
| 6 to 12 months | Booster DHPPi + L and rabies | Completes the puppy course |
If you adopt an older puppy or an adult dog with no records, vets usually give two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart, then follow the adult plan.
Adult boosters
- Rabies: every year in most Pakistani clinics (some vaccines are licensed for longer; your vet decides).
- Leptospirosis: every year, because its protection is short.
- Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus: every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine and your vet's advice. Many clinics give the combined shot yearly.
Rabies in Pakistan
Rabies is still common in Pakistan, mostly spread by dog bites. A vaccinated pet is far safer for your family and the dogs around it. If your dog is bitten or scratched by another animal, wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes and call your vet the same day, even if your dog is vaccinated. If a person is bitten, they should also see a doctor straight away.
Vaccines that depend on lifestyle
- Kennel cough (Bordetella): worth it if your dog goes to boarding, grooming salons, training classes or dog parks. Many boarding kennels ask for it.
- Parainfluenza: usually already in the combined shot.
- Coronavirus: some combined shots include it; it is not considered essential by international guidance.
Before the course is finished
Until about two weeks after the last puppy shot, keep your puppy away from streets, parks and unknown dogs, and from places where stray dogs go. Play at home and with vaccinated, healthy dogs you know. Carry your puppy if you must go out. Parvovirus lives in soil for months, so a walk in the wrong place can be enough.
Questions
At what age should a puppy get its first vaccine in Pakistan?
Most vets give the first combined shot (DHPPi) at 6 to 8 weeks old, then repeat it every 3 to 4 weeks until the puppy is at least 16 weeks old.
When should a puppy get the rabies vaccine?
Usually at 12 to 16 weeks old, with a booster 6 to 12 months later and then every year in most Pakistani clinics. Your vet will confirm the timing for the vaccine they use.
How often does an adult dog need vaccines?
Rabies and leptospirosis every year. Distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine; many clinics give the combined shot yearly.
Can my puppy go outside before all its vaccines?
Keep it away from streets, parks, stray dogs and unknown dogs until about two weeks after the last puppy shot. Playing at home and with healthy, vaccinated dogs you know is fine.
What should I do if my dog is bitten by a stray?
Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes and call your vet the same day, even if your dog is vaccinated against rabies. If a person was bitten, they should see a doctor straight away.
