On the way to the vet

1Call the clinic first, say what happened, and check a vet can see you now.
2Keep your pet calm and still. Wrap them loosely in a towel or blanket to keep them warm, and carry small pets in a box or carrier.
3Hurt or frightened animals can bite, even gentle ones. Move slowly and keep your face away.
4Don't give any human medicine. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and many others are poisonous to pets. Don't give food or water unless the vet says so.
5For bleeding, press a clean cloth firmly on the wound and keep pressing on the way.
6If they ate something harmful, bring the packet or a photo of it. Don't try to make them sick unless a vet tells you to.
7If they've overheated, move them into shade and wet their coat with cool, not ice-cold, water on the way.

General guidance only, not a replacement for a vet. If in doubt, call a clinic now.

Not sure it's an emergency?

A video call vet can look at your pet on camera and tell you whether to go in now. They can't treat your pet, so if it's serious, go to a clinic.

Emergency vets: questions

What counts as a pet emergency?

Go to a vet straight away if your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed or can't stand, is bleeding heavily, has a seizure, has been hit by a vehicle, has eaten something poisonous (rat poison, insecticide, human medicine, chocolate), is straining but can't pass urine, has a swollen, tight belly, or keeps vomiting or has diarrhoea with blood. If you're unsure, call a clinic and describe what you see.

How do you know which vets are open now?

From the opening hours each clinic sets on Pawzaar, in the clinic's own time zone. Clinics marked Open 24/7 have told us they take emergencies around the clock. Hours can change on public holidays and at short notice, so always call before you set off.

Should I call the clinic before going?

Yes. A quick call lets the clinic confirm a vet is there and get ready for your pet. They can also tell you what to do on the way.

Can a video call help in an emergency?

A video call vet can help you judge how urgent things are and what to do next, but can't examine or treat your pet. If your pet is in serious trouble, go to a clinic.

Does Pawzaar charge for this?

No. Calling or messaging a clinic from this page is free. You pay the clinic for any treatment.
