A pet's energy needs grow more slowly than its weight, so we use the standard energy rules vets use and turn calories into grams of dry food (about 3.6-3.8 kcal per gram):
It's a starting point for dry food only. Wet food, treats and chews are extra calories, and active, neutered or overweight pets need different amounts, so follow the feeding table on the bag and your vet's advice.

An adult dog needs roughly 32 g × (weight in kg)^0.75 of dry food a day: about 75 g for a 3 kg dog, 180 g for 10 kg and 410 g for 30 kg. Small dogs eat about 2-3% of their body weight; big dogs eat proportionally less. Puppies need about 60% more for their weight.
Most adult cats eat 50-70 g of dry food a day: about 50 g for a 3 kg cat, 60 g for 4 kg and 70 g for 5 kg. Kittens need about 80% more for their weight while they're growing.
For a 10 kg adult dog eating about 180 g a day, a 3 kg bag lasts around 16 days. For a 5 kg dog (about 105 g a day) it lasts about 4 weeks.
Foods differ in calories, and so do pets: very active, neutered, older or overweight pets need different amounts. Use the feeding table on the bag and your vet's advice, and weigh your pet every few weeks.
